Bike-a-thon

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Ok, so I'm a total dweeb and want to give another environmental-love tip o' the week, maybe I should really start making it a weekly thing, but I'd probably crack under the pressure.

Anyway, here it is. Grab a backpack, one of those kiddie carriages(like you hook on the back of your bike) and ride to the grocery store.

Not only are you doing something nice the the earth(yeah!! props for you!) but you are exposing your kids to fresh air(hopefully not too much exhaust), giving yourself some exercise and a tan, and only taking a few more minutes each way. Are you worried about stuff staying frozen? Take an ice pack wrapped in a towel with you. You may not be able to carry as much, but then that means you have to ride again tomorrow and gosh darn it, get more exercise! It may even help you decide to eat more fresh veggies when you see them at the market. Have a kid who can ride their own bike, make them carry something home in their backpack too(something light though, no gallon of milk please).

Wait you say! The store is within walking distance....bring a sling, load up the stroller at the store, and sling the kidlette up on the way home, even more exercise for you, and bonding time with mom....SWEET!

Ok, I know it sounds crazy, but hey it is the way we have to do it here. I know this isn't plausible for everyone, but if it is, give it a shot and see what you think.

I so wish that I could use our bike trailer for grocery shopping. Brett can hardly get up the hill off our street with the girls in tow! (and it's super hilly and a 10min DRIVE to the closest store.) :( Ya know, it will probably work great when we are in Alaska though! Umm, shoot. What do you do when you have 3 kids though?

This is why I think I'd love to live in Switzerland.

steph - too bad, maybe next place you live. Dunno about the three kids thing, hopefully C will be riding her own bike by then? I hope Clark will be in preschool learning his Japanese at that time.

QS- go for it! start job searches for Ry now =)

Good for you, environmental for the win. I think drivers in the U.S. have a passionate hatred for bicyclists, so I've started walking to work to avoid death. Still, am hoping to get in some biking of my own. Happy biking with tiny Clark!
