Return of the Trees

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Yep, it has been over a month since I gave you an update on the trees. Summer is comming to a close(though a bit hot still), so I thought I'd give a nice update before the stop growing so fast. The Avocado has seriously grown 3 feet this summer. The mango is doing great and has quite a few leaves. We'll keep it in a pot over the winter and try to plant it in the yard next summer. I am so excited! Even if they never fruit, just seeing them grow so well is a ton of fun. Next year I'm going to try biwa, a.k.a. the loquat, and see how that goes.

For a comparison of the mango tree, read to the end of this post.

It is hard to see the top of the tree, because it is partially covered by another, but it is right above those branches, kind of hidden by the glare of the sun, but if you want to compare, check out this post and see where it used to be in relation to our kitchen window.

My parents house had an avocado tree that was grown from a pit that produced MASSIVE amounts of fruit. That's totally unheard of. My dad would always prune it when it was covered in baby fruit because it would shade his garden and it drove my mother nuts! She finally sighed in frustration "if you are going to do that every year you might as well chop the whole thing down". And uhh, he did. It's STILL painful to me (and my mom, and anyone who knows how rare of a tree that was).

This is so fun to watch happen...from across the ocean. ;-)

You and Pam are total green thumbs.

Ohhh, so I might get fruit!! That is awesome for an avocado to bear fruit in No. Cal! I feel for your loss.

Thanks for the tree update suggestion, it was a great idea you had! Though I gotta say, the green thumb has a lot more to do with how wet it is, than with me. You should so how sad my zucchini, dill and cilantro are.
