Japan Sucks!
Thursday, October 11, 2007
So as promised a post about the not so good side of Japan. Sorry, I'll talk about last weekend's trip to Ojiichan and Obaachan's later. I'm tired. Now onto the meat of the post...literally.
Don't get me wrong, I totally dig this place. What I find sad and fascinating is kujira. Kujira= whale. Yep, whale meat. Masaki had some at the sushi restaurant on Saturday. It was "ah alright". Talking to Kimiko about it, she said it was all they had for school lunch when she was a little kid. Beef and Pork were too expensive, but it wasn't that good she said. So there is a history of eating, but it isn't that good. They are selling it in the supermarket right now. I kinda doubt the whole 'scientific research' excuse. What is sad, the gov't is trying to encourage people to eat it because the demand is dropping. I say, just let it go and stop fighting the population and a large portion of the world. Oh well. I just wish they'd say it wasn't scientific...and fess up, if nothing else. I mean, seriously, who believes it? Especially when whale meat is sold at the famous Tsukiji Market where sushi for large portions of the world is bought and sold. Not scientific in my book.

Nevertheless...I still dig living here...just wanted to show the balance.

Interesting, I just read an article about this in the latest Time magazine. They said that the whalers are afraid of losing their livelihood. Is this the town where you live??
Thomas has requested the smiley card from Clark several times now when he's sad. He says it will make him smile :)
I wrote a paper in college on the current whaling issues (well, current back then ;). It is hard to believe that it is still going on in a big market situation like that (I totally get the native people who hunt once a year as a tradition or something, but anything on a large scale--?!?)
Oh! glad the card was a hit.
As for the town, I used to live in a fishing town that had some whaling too. The way whaling is now in Japan, no town has it's livelyood based on whaling(unlike the dolphin based town) anymore.
Wow, I don't think I could bring myself to eat whale. I'm already boycotting shark fin soup.
That photo makes me a little ill..
ps. Got the package...and I'll go to the store tomorrow to get your spices... email me if you want more!
