Random Granola Stuff I'm up to

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

So this is less on the environmental side, but still totally granola.

FAM- Fertility Awareness Method, not to be confused with the Rhythm Method. I'm still reading the book, but I'm excited for it, plus I guess it can help infertile couples have greater understanding of their cycles as well so that they can pin point problems pretty quickly. We are going to try to get pregnant really soon, so if something goes awry, no harm no foul. Anyone use FAM?

EC(elimination communication)-Clark loved the potty when we were at Pam's house(he loves saying Pam when he sees pictures of her), so Pam suggested getting an EC book. I'm still reading The Diaper-Free Baby by Christine Gross-Loh, but we got him a potty, and we sit on it least once a day. I have no idea what I am doing, but we'll try to be a bit more hard core once the house warms up enough to go around with fewer than three layers of clothing on. Suggestions/ideas are more than welcome.

Diva Cup - Ok, I am having some issues with the installation of this thing. We are still having some leakage, but I REALLY want this to work. I've dreamed of someone making these since I started, once I discovered it I was so excited. Dang, it has a steep learning curve though. I REALLY want this to work.

Anyone else want to share?

I use FAM as well. I just couldn't stand the thought of putting extra hormones in my body after Cailyn was born and so I had to find an alternative. It works well as long as you follow the "rules". hehe...

I love EC! I didn't learn about it until Cailyn was 10 months, so we started late with her. I started with Adeline soon after birth. Most kids go potty right as they are waking up, so taking them first thing in the morning and right after naps is an easy way to start. Some kids go AS they are waking up and some want to wait for 5-10min or so, so there is a bit more you will learn about your son that way. I would check Cailyn's diaper a lot and if she had been dry for a long time I would just sit her on the potty. She was pretty amazing about it though. She went in the potty a few times the first DAY that I tried. By 14 months she was in panties for the day & 18 months I didn't have to remind her anymore or help her out. Night times took a lot longer with her. Adeline has recently switched over to panties at night and it's going well. Even though we started younger with her, she's a very different kid and went through more cycles of no accidents to potty strikes.

Hmm, I never had any leakage with my Diva Cup. :/ I did have a day where it was hurting a lot, but I found out that it was up too high and putting pressure on my cervix. Ugh. After I put it in I turn it 180 degrees to make sure that it has popped open fully. There is a website that lists a lot of different folds you can use for it...but that's more for if you are having trouble actually getting it in and open I think.

I haven't tried FAM but have a lot of friends who have with great success. From my understanding, I don't get enough sleep in a row yet to get a consistant temp so not a choice for us at the moment.

Good luck with all of that!

Thanks for the EC tips Steph, and I am having some popping problems, so if you find that website, pass it along. I can't get it to pop for the life of me!

Kim, (correct me if I'm wrong Stephanie) you are right, what I've read says you need to sleep at least 3 hours straight before taking your temp, which is why I couldn't do it this morning since I was up at all hours last night. So yeah...even sleep is super important.

Honestly, I was never good about temping at all with FAM. So I guess I kind of used it/kind of didn't. I charted to keep track of my cycle and cervical mucus. It wasn't that important to us to prevent pregnancy, so I wasn't too worried if I messed it up. If you get a 3 hrs straight earlier on in the night you can temp then as well. (Like if the babe/you sleep from 11-2 you could temp then.) It's still important to take your temp consistently though--even if you have a bad night. I used fertilityfriend.com to keep track of things.

And here is a link to different folds. :)

That stuff is all very cool and intriguing. My friend Megan was hoping she could potty train her baby around 1 year old, and her mom doesn't believe she can do it. I should show her this.
